Mitchell Toews, author of Pinching Zwieback (At Bay Press 2023), has been nominated for the 2025 McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize, with his short story, All Our Swains Commend Her (published & nominated by ‘Pulp Literature’).
Toews says that, “The story, All Our Swains Commend Her, takes its title from Shakespeare and concerns an unhoused person making an unapologetic living on the mean streets of Winnipeg in January. Two daily commuters enjoy a strange but kindred relationship with her until one morning, the rift between them is uncomfortably revealed. The story is one of approximately 140 pieces (44 in Canada) that I have had published since I began writing fiction in 2016, plus the 20 in ‘Pinching Zwieback’ (At Bay Press 2023). I also have four Pushcart Prize nominations among my submissions. And over 700 rejections!”
